What is a handmade bicycle builder trying to achieve? What differentiates a handmade bicycle from a mass produced bicycle? Simple- a soul.
A mass produced bicycle frame in many instances is built by a machine. It is typically built with philosophy of making a product that will fit the most people with the lowest production cost. Human hands have minimal contact in it’s production.
Every handmade frameset contains a little bit of the soul of the craftsman who made it. Each tube is cut by a human hand, each miter is delicately filed. Every detail, even those that are never seen is a direct result of the artisan’s passion for building the perfect machine. From inception to the final application of paint, it is a passionate endeavor.
Instead of just making a product, a handmade bicycle takes into account the human being which will be paired with it. Painstaking attention is taken to ensure that the rider and the bicycle have synergy. A bicycle on its own is just an inanimate object. A human being with out a bicycle is just that; a human being. A symbiosis exists when a bicycle perfectly compliments its human counterpart. The rider becomes the engine which brings the inanimate object to life. When properly done, the line between man and machine blurs. That is the goal of every handmade frame builder.
A handmade bicycle is a work of art built by human hands using materials wrought of this earth. When fire is applied, the result is something special. It does not get any more elemental than that.
